This one-day course will focus on orthotic management of specific conditions of the forearm, wrist and fingers including distal radial ulnar (DRUJ) instability, extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) instability, limited wrist ROM, and ligamentous tightness or laxity.  The format of this course will include interactive discussions regarding appropriate anatomy, pathophysiology, orthotic application, and clinical reasoning in support of orthotic design.  This course is geared toward intermediate level learners; however, participants of all levels are welcome and will be supported as needed.  All materials required for fabrication are included in the cost and will be provided at the course.  The host will provide lunch during a one-hour break provided at noon.  Please reach out with any specific dietary needs or concerns.

Orthoses will include:

  • Muenster or modified muenster orthosis
  • DRUJ/ECU stabilization orthosis
  • DRUJ cuff orthosis
  • Static progressive wrist flexion/extension orthosis
  • Static progressive ORL stretch
  • PIP serial cast
  • Custom anti-ulnar deviation

By registering for this course all participants agree to adhere to all COVID-19 policies set forth by the host facility.  Due to the fluid nature of the pandemic, these policies may change and will be communicated in writing at the Right Hand Therapy website and via email communication prior to the course.  Please refer to our Cancellation Policy for additional details.

Course Objectives:

Following the course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess various splint materials available for orthotic management.
  • Determine conditions and impairments of the forearm, wrist and fingers that would benefit from orthotic management, i.e. DRUJ instability, in order to support engagement in meaningful occupations.
  • Demonstrate fabrication of 7 custom orthoses for the forearm, wrist and fingers.
  • Learning outcomes will be assessed during hands-on lab sessions via observation and demonstration of skills.  A certificate of attendance will be issued to all attendees participating in the full program to meet CEU requirements.  In order to receive a certificate, participants must demonstrate fabrication of each of the orthoses in the program.
